Hold your nerve – Black Friday is approaching

Hold your nerve Black Friday Cyber Monday

The annual Black Friday sales event is fast approaching. What was traditionally a one-day event that created excitement and anticipation has now evolved into a series of extended campaigns spanning the last few months of the year creating huge sales opportunities.

According to an analysis conducted by finder.com, consumers in the UK are predicted to spend £3.95 billion during Black Friday and Cyber Monday (BFCM). But, with the global economic crisis impacting consumers’ disposable income, many will be looking to save money this year.

Spending across the UK is expected to drop by more than £850 million (18%). Nonetheless, the survey also revealed that despite a reduction in overall spending, the number of Brits planning to shop on BFCM has risen by 6% from last year, increasing from 33% in 2021 to 39% in 2022.

BFCM is a crucial period for retailers. It can account for as much as 40% of a company’s annual sales. With so much riding on this peak sales period, it can inject dread or joy into businesses.  IT teams working for large retailers, logistics and fulfilment organisations are under immense pressure in the lead up to BFCM. Avoiding downtime or compromised throughput during a peak period is essential. Organisations need to be sure that the IT infrastructure supporting their eCommerce sites can cope as downtime or slow response times often lead to:

  • Lost sales revenue
  • Lost customers
  • Reputational damage
  • Regulatory and compliance implications

Prepare your business and maximise the profits

Success is often determined by an organisation’s planning and different teams have different challenges and concerns. For IT teams, preparing systems for the increase in transaction workload and ensuring database and application scalability is key to a successful sales period. The team must be confident that the high-availability solution is configured to ensure no downtime and that a failover strategy is in place.
