Triton Consulting Announces General Availability Of DB2 10 For LUW
Earlier this month, IBM announced the forthcoming release of DB2 10 for Linux, Unix and Windows. As IBM Premier Business Partners, Triton Consulting are delighted to announce that the product will be available from today, the 30th April 2012.
With a reduction in overall database licensing, administration and storage costs, there are many new features and benefits the new version brings to the market. DB2 10 offers exciting new capabilities that can help to save time and money. It aids developers’ and database administrators’ productivity, eases the effort and expense of deploying new applications, and takes advantage of query performance and compression involvements to help lower overall data management costs.
DB2 10 for LUW enables users to create time-aware tables and queries in less than an hour, protect data privacy with less duplication and designate optimal storage allocation for data based on its currency. Data can be compressed dynamically and incrementally and the new version lowers the costs and risks of creating and maintaining point-in-time queries.
Further functions of DB2 10 for LUW include:
Optimized Storage Utilisation: Multi-Temperature Data Management allows for grouping of hot, warm, and cold data on varying storage systems. Different storage technologies can be used to help optimize performance while minimising cost. Storage can be allocated depending on data temperature, such as placing hot data on the fastest and most expensive Solid® State Disks (SSDs), while other data can reside on less expensive storage systems.
Further Storage Savings with Improved Compression: Significant enhancements are evident with DB2’s industry-leading compression technologies that now include the new Adaptive Compression, which can further help reduce storage needs. The enhancements deliver efficient compression of high amounts of new and changing data. The improved compression ratio further helps reduce storage needs and allows for more data in memory, therefore, helping to increase performance. The new approach used in Adaptive Compression also reduces the need for table reorganization. As a consequence, overall maintenance of compressed data is reduced, helping to achieve additional cost savings.
Easier Business Trend Analysis and Application Development: Time Travel Query, based on the SQL 2011 standard, is integrated into the database engine to provide significant performance and manageability advantages. Time Travel Query provides the infrastructure for time-aware analytics to reduce the operational complexity of collecting and analysing time-based data.
Time Travel Query accelerates dynamic analysis of business trends and changes over time, for both new and existing applications. It provides the flexibility to audit for change with system-controlled temporal data, and to analyse all kinds of temporal data including forward-looking data when using user-controlled temporal data.
Security Enhancements: Row and Column Access Control provides easy and flexible control over data access. Security policies that are optimal for your environment are specified by creating permissions for rows and masks for columns based on rules defined for users, groups, and roles. This level of detail enables ease of control access by roles such as departmental, supervisory, database administrators (DBAs), system administrators and others, and allow for full separation of duty between security officers and DBAs.
Performance Enhancements: DB2 10 LUW adds many enhancements designed to further increase the performance of queries. Zigzag join is now available and is capable of delivering sub-second response time on complex multi-dimensional queries. Other join methods are also enhanced for memory usage efficiency, early predicate evaluation, support of expressions in predicates, as well as optimiser costing and query plan optimisation. Additionally, the INTRA_PARALLELISM variable can be set dynamically to optimise performance on multicore systems for specific applications or workloads.
Continuous Data Ingest Utility: The ingest utility allows the seamless roll-in of external data feeds with minimal impact on operations, including long-running queries. It enables real-time business analytics with massive volumes of streaming external data. It is designed to avoid trade-off between data concurrency and data availability.
DB2 pureScale: The DB2 pureScale Feature brings clustering technology to DB2 on distributed IBM Power® System and System x® platforms. Business needs around availability and scalability are achieved, and at the same time, it is easy to configure and administer. By combining the extensive features of DB2 with the availability and scalability of the DB2 pureScale feature along with IBM system dependability and flexibility, the result is a comprehensive data management solution that helps to meet and surpass the most demanding business needs.
